Chapter 18

The Summoning

We arrive back at the house, and while Evan walks me to my room, I start asking questions, “Who were those guys?” Expecting him to give me some concrete answers, but in return, his demeanor uncharacteristically alters to strict and distant.

He pushes me into the bedroom, quickly grips the door handle, and says in a stern tone, “Stay here, Anna. I’ll come to check on you in a bit.” Instinctively, I nod as he shuts the door in my face. Something is very wrong for Evan to change so abruptly. And that’s when I hear a car door slam outside, so I shift to the window of my room. Looking out, I watch two elegant young women stroll up to the house with Regis, swooning all over him, one on each arm, laughing and tauntingly running their hands through his hair. Another guard stalks directly behind them.

Nate’s perched on a red Porsche, appearing as if he’s telling Evan to move the car, pointing a finger out in another direction from the garages. The front door makes me jump as it closes, and I shift over to the bedroom door. With caution, I pry it open. Just enough that I can peek through, Regis escorts the women into the secret room below. Every guard follows, including Evan and Cecil. As they walk beneath the stairs, Evan glances discreetly up to my room, and I quickly close it shut. Breathing faster, afraid of being caught for snooping, I slump my head against the door in dread that Evan will mention it to Nate.

As more shudder-some thoughts wander inside my mind, I whisper out to no one but myself, “What in the goddess’ name are they doing with those human women from the club? And why would they want to bring them here, to our home? I shift to the closet, change into a pair of jeans and a plain dark tee-shirt, and sit by the door.
